Led by a fourth-place performance from freshman Alice Kim, the Northwestern women’s golf team tied for seventh of 16 teams in the 11th Annual Texas A&M “Mo”morial Invitational in Cypress, Texas.
Falling one place in Tuesday morning’s third and final round, the 38th-ranked Wildcats improved on last year’s 13th-place showing. They shot 303-304-309 to finish with a 52-over par 916. No. 37 Kansas State and Missouri tied for first place at 45-over. Host Texas A&M tied for fourth.
Kim finished fourth of 88 players, earning her second fourth-place finish in two weeks. Her previous fourth-place showing came at last week’s Central District Classic, in which the Cats placed sixth. Kim shot a 6-over 222 at the “Mo”morial with rounds of 76,72, and 74 to tie Wisconsin’s Malinda Johnson.
Kelly Robb fell from her first-round sixth-place spot to tie for 22nd. The freshman finished at 14-over with a 230.
Tying for 38th, juniors Mary Ellen Grzebien and Ina Kim each shot an 18-over 234. Heather Scholten shot a 20-over 236. The freshman tied for 50th.
Held at the Blackhorse Golf Club North Course, the three-round “Mo”morial is named for former A&M standout Monica Welsh. Welsh, who died in a car accident in 1992, was a two-time Texas Association of Intercollegiate Athletics For Women All-State selection.
The Cats will spend the upcoming weeks preparing for the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational held March 21-23 in Austin, Texas.
