Numbers increase at Blomquist, SPAC with onset of winter

Trying to find a treadmill on campus? Good luck.

The demand for cardiovascular exercise machines has increased at campus gyms as frigid weather and New Year’s resolutions combine to send students indoors.

At the Sports Pavilion and Aquatics Center, the hours between 4 and 7 p.m. have been the busiest, according to supervisor Nina Mariano, a Communication junior.

But the yearly resolution rush doesn’t last long, said Weinberg junior John Sizemore, a pro-shop attendant at SPAC.

“They never really last more than a couple weeks,” he said. “It’s even less busy now than it was a few weeks ago.”

Many runners who have gone indoors for the winter are also increasing traffic at SPAC and the Blomquist Recreation Center.

Weinberg sophomore Jonathan Volk said he ran six times a week Fall Quarter but has had to adjust his routine for the winter. Sometimes he just doesn’t run.

Blomquist is Volk’s favorite place to exercise because he lives on South Campus, he said. But the gym frequently is crowded.

“It’s annoying, especially at Blomquist,” he said. “I get fed up.”

At SPAC, some patrons also have complained to attendants when the gym gets very busy.

“I know people get frustrated when there’s no towels or no locks,” Mariano said. “The track is always packed and it’s really hard to get a machine.”

Still, many students said the fight for fitness machines doesn’t lessen their motivation.

Emily Smith, a Weinberg freshman, went to the gym for the first time Tuesday night to compensate for not going outside so frequently as she did during warmer months.

“It’s freezing (now), so I just hide in my room under my covers,” she said.

Communication sophomore Dania Aguero also said she goes to the gym more often during Winter Quarter — to get ready for Spring Break.

“I find that I’m outside less, so I want to be here more,” Aguero said. “I intensify my workout when I know Spring Break is coming.”

Instead of waiting in line for machines, some students are joining yoga or pilates classes to keep in shape. Norris Bookstore has seen an increase in the demand for yoga mats from students who say they are enrolled in these classes on campus, according to several cashiers.

“We didn’t notice a lot last year, but this year they’re buying them all,” said Darwin Barnes, general merchandising manager at the bookstore. “(On Tuesday) we sold our last mat.”
