Northwestern men’s basketball coach Bill Carmody announced the addition of sophomore Joe Kennedy to the 2003-04 team Tuesday.
Kennedy, a 5-foot-10, 190 pound guard, transferred to NU this year after spending his freshman year at DePaul. He did not play for the Blue Demons basketball program, and is therefore eligible to play for the Cats this season under NCAA rules.
Kennedy attended nearby Loyola Academy, where he was a four-year letterman and All-Catholic League as a senior.
“I saw him when he was in high shool two years ago and he was a good player,” Carmody said.
The prep school won conference and regional titles when Kennedy was a junior.
His father, Pat Kennedy, was the coach at DePaul from 1997 until he resigned in 2002 season. Prior to taking over the Blue Demons’ program he was the head coach at Florida State. He is now entering his second season as head coach at Montana.
Carmody said that Kennedy has been playing pickup games with the team since school started.
“He’s going to have to feel his way around, but he picks things up pretty quickly,” Carmody said. “He’ll add to our depth, and how well he plays will tell me how much time he’s going to get.”
