Northwestern football coach Randy Walker paused, took a deep breath and shook his head as he remembered the beginning of last season’s spring practice. The Wildcats’ depth chart at quarterback and running back looked like a multiple-choice test with Walker searching for answers.
A year later, NU began spring drills Tuesday with plenty of questions — but not at quarterback or running back, thanks to Brett Basanez and Jason Wright. The pair emerged from the rubble of a 3-9 season to enter the spring as two of the Cats’ most promising players.
“We are light years ahead of where we were last year, just in terms of a confidence level in our offense,” Walker said.
