Ben Folds will play a concert Nov. 21 on the Evanston Campus, a publicist for Atlantic Records said Tuesday.
Folds is the second on-campus, popular music concert scheduled for Fall Quarter. A&O Productions is brining hip-hop act Jurassic 5 to Patten Gym on Nov. 7.
Singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik will open for Folds, said Carise Yatter, a publicist for Atlantic Records.
Yatter said she did not know what time the concert would begin or where the acts would perform. Atlantic is promoting Sheik’s fourth album, “Daylight,” which was released in August.
A&O Productions would not confirm that it was bringing the singers, but the group’s chairman, Jonathan Berman, said the group was working to have a second concert this quarter.
“We’re trying to bring a show that’s completely different from Jurassic 5,” said Berman, a Weinberg senior.
Campus Activities Office officials on Tuesday also would not confirm that the bands were coming to campus and knew of no show time or venue. The office has asked A&O not to publicize campus events until all contracts for the events are signed.
This month Folds began his second tour of the year, which includes a Nov. 27 show at the Vic Theatre in Chicago. He recently released a live album recorded during his first set of 2002 tours.
Folds is known for his quirky songwriting and complex piano playing. His former band, Ben Folds Five, broke up in 2001 when he went solo.
Sheik was made famous by his 1997 smash hit “Barely Breathing.”
Tickets for the Jurassic 5 show are on sale now at Norris Box Office for $5. About 1,400 of the 1,800 tickets available have been sold, Berman said.
At last week’s Associated Student Government Senate meeting, the Student Activities Finance Board recommended that A&O receive $74,926 in fall supplemental funding. The group requested $142,360.
If the original recommendation passed at tonight’s ASG Senate meeting, it would allow A&O to hold its Spring Quarter A&O Ball, as well as a smaller concert Winter Quarter, Berman said.
“We are very pleased with the SAFB recommendation,” Berman said. “We are hopeful that the recommendation will be passed.”
Members of the NU community were excited to hear that the acts were coming to campus.
“I’m really impressed with a popular rock band (such as Ben Folds) with my favorite instrumentation,” said Eric Samuels, a Doppelt Jewish Campus Service Corps fellow. “I would be ecstatic to see them on campus.”
