MTV-friendly punk-rock band Sum 41 will play Nevin’s Live on Nov. 19 and 20 as part of its “Sum on Your Face” club tour.
The band chose to play small venues in promotion of its upcoming album, “Does This Look Infected?” said Mitch Marlow, talent buyer for Nevin’s Live.
“I’m really excited to have a small room host a big-name band,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity.”
Employees at the booking office said this is the biggest name that has ever passed through the doors of Nevin’s Live, 1450 Sherman Ave. — monetarily speaking.
Brian Bockrath, an intern at Nevin’s Live, said John Cale from Velvet Underground, who played at venue’s opening in April 2001, is a larger talent.
Tickets for the show are $10 and are on sale at www.TicketWeb.com. Tickets online are limited to two per order and are nearly sold out, Marlow said.
Half of the tickets for two shows will be given away by two Chicago radio stations, WZZN-FM (94.7) and WKQX-FM (101.1). Each station has 100 tickets to give to listeners, Marlow said.
Doors open for both shows at 7 p.m. and the concerts start at 7:45 p.m. As of now there is no opening band scheduled, Marlow said.
Sum 41’s pop-punk style resonated with teenagers in its first full-length album, “All Killer, No Filler.” The band’s single “Fat Lip” became popular with watchers of MTV’s Total Request Live, and it quickly climbed its way to the top of the show’s list.
“Does This Look Infected?” the follow-up to the the group’s 2001 debut, will be released Nov. 26.
Marlow said the band is not typical of acts normally booked at Nevin’s, which has been known to bring hip-hop, country, folk and local rock acts to its club.
“I’m not a Sum 41 fan,” said Bockrath, a McCormick sophomore. “But I think it’ll be an interesting experience putting a band like that in a small room (like Nevin’s).”
