Notre Dame at Florida State
Time: 11 a.m.
Place: Tallahassee, Fla.
Line: Florida State by 10
TV: ABC
Records: Notre Dame (7-0), Florida St. (5-2)
What’s at stake: Notre Dame holds the third spot in the BCS ranking and is poised to make a Fiesta Bowl appearance if another team at the top slips up. A loss for No. 13 Florida State could end any hopes for a BCS bowl game.
Overview: This is the first matchup of two BCS-ranked teams this season. It is also No. 6 Notre Dame’s first-ever trip to Tallahassee. But Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden is no stranger to the Fighting Irish. Florida State is 3-1 against Notre Dame under Bowden. Both teams are coming off bouts with unbeatens. Notre Dame was able to thwart Air Force’s attack last week, but Florida State missed a field goal to allow No. 1 Miami to remain unbeaten in a matchup two weeks ago. The Fighting Irish downed the Falcons 21-14 last Saturday, while the Seminoles relaxed during their bye week. Both teams take good care of the football this year. Florida State is sixth in the nation and Notre Dame is 17th in turnover-margin.
Georgia at Kentucky
Time: 2:30 p.m.
Place: Lexington, Ky.
Line: Georgia by 4
TV: CBS
Records: Georgia (7-0, 4-0 SEC), Kentucky (5-2, 1-2)
What’s at stake: Georgia has won 10 of its last 11 meetings with Kentucky.
Overview: Historically one-sided, this matchup was made a lot closer last week when the No. 5 Bulldogs lost three key offensive threats to injuries. Georgia’s top rusher, Musa Smith, its best lineman, Jon Stinchcomb, and its second-leading receiver, Fred Gibson, are out. So the Wildcats’ chances look a lot better. With the injuries, Georgia could be the most likely unbeaten team to fall. If the Bulldogs can survive, all three players could be back next week, and the team doesn’t have any ranked teams left on its schedule. Kentucky has held its own in the underdog role this year. The Wildcats upset then-No. 22 Louisville to open the season, and lost to then-No. 9 Florida by just seven points on Sept. 28.
Iowa State at Texas
Time: 2:30 p.m.
Place: Austin, Texas
Line: Texas by 13
TV: None
Records: Iowa State (6-2, 3-1 Big 12), Texas (6-1, 2-1)
What’s at stake: A loss for Texas ends its national championship hopes. A loss for Iowa State jeopardizes its shot at a BCS bowl game.
Overview: Last week hurt the ego of both teams’ offenses. The No. 7 Longhorns’ 17-14 dogfight victory over No. 19 Kansas State dipped their offense to 84th in the nation. Iowa State’s Heisman hopeful Senneca Wallace had a quarterback efficiency rating of 7.3 with three interceptions and
minus-28 rushing yards in the Cyclones’ 49-3 loss to No. 2 Oklahoma in Norman.
So. California at Oregon
Time: 2:30 p.m.
Place: Eugene, Ore.
Line: Even
TV: None
Records: So. California (5-2, 3-1 Pac-10), Oregon (6-1, 2-1)
What’s at stake: Both teams are in the BCS standings right now. The loser of this game won’t be come Monday.
Overview: Southern California hasn’t beaten a ranked Pac-10 opponent on the road in its last eight attempts. No. 14 Oregon was removed from the national championship talk when it lost to Arizona State 45-42 last Saturday. Oregon is the sixth ranked team the Trojans will face this year. Oregon tailback Onterrio Smith is sixth in the nation with 133.7 rushing yards per game. Smith leads the team with 12 touchdowns. The Ducks have the 112th-ranked passing defense, allowing 936 yards in the air in the past two games.
