Iowa at Penn State
Time: 11:05 a.m.
Place: State College, Pa.
Line: Penn State by 8
TV: ESPN
Records: Iowa (3-1, 0-0 Big Ten), Penn State (3-0, 0-0)
What’s at stake: Iowa’s last road win against a nationally ranked opponent came in 1996 against none other than Penn State, where the Hawkeyes upset the eighth-ranked Nittany Lions, 21-20.
Overview: The Nittany Lions’ offense has benefited greatly from the emergence of sophomore quarterback Zack Mills and backup Michael Robinson, who doubles as a running back and scored three touchdowns on three consecutive carries in a 49-17 win over Louisiana Tech last week. The Hawkeyes lead the Big Ten in scoring (41.2 ppg) behind quarterback Brad Banks, who has yet to throw an interception in 85 pass attempts.
Michigan at Illinois
Time: 2:30 p.m.
Place: Champaign, Ill.
Line: Michigan by 7
TV: ABC
Records: Michigan (3-1, 0-0), Illinois (1-3, 0-0)
What’s at stake: Michigan has won 21 straight Big Ten openers and five of the last six matchups against Illinois.
Overview: The Illini lead the Big Ten in passing (286.2 ypg) behind Jon Beutjer, who has thrown for 692 yards and eight touchdowns in two games as a starter. The transfer from Iowa will be tested by the Wolverines’ secondary, which is among the best in the conference. Michigan has recorded a league-high 17 sacks and has forced 11 turnovers. But quarterback John Navarre — who produced just 10 points at home against Utah last Saturday — is not the most popular man in Michigan right now. Even though Michigan made it to the Big Ten with just one loss, its offense will be expected to produce more.
