The Northwestern fencing team hoped to begin the defense of its 2001 Midwest Fencing Conference title on a strong note last weekend when it traveled to Columbus, Ohio, to compete in the Ohio State Open.
By Monday morning, the team had returned to Evanston with a 6-0 record.
Fencers dueled against teams such as Michigan, Michigan State and perennial conference power Ohio State.
Perhaps the most encouraging win of the weekend was the Wildcats’ 15-12 defeat of the host Buckeyes.
“Beating Ohio State proved that we’ve got a really strong team, despite having graduated some of our strongest fencers,” senior sabreist Kate Frambach said.
