EPD to auction lost, stolen, abandoned bikes Saturday

Tired of walking?

Evanston Police Department on Saturday will auction off nearly 100 orphaned bicycles.

The auction will be held at the old firehouse garage at 909 Lake St. It will start at 9:30 a.m., and the bidding will begin at 10 a.m., EPD Property Officer Fred Pittelkau said.

Money from the auction will go into the police pension fund, by city ordinance, Pittelkau said.

Bikes in the auction were lost, stolen or abandoned and were never reclaimed, said Cmdr. Michael Perry of EPD.

The average going price has been $45 to $50, but some end up selling for a couple of hundred dollars, Pittelkau said.

“Some of the bikes are in good shape, and some are not,” Perry said.

Pittelkau said that many of the bikes could not be returned because the owners failed to keep track of their serial numbers.

“If it’s not registered or there’s no reported serial number, they go unclaimed,” he said. “When you buy a bike, keep your receipt with your serial number.”

Pittelkau said there’s a good chance a “We Fix Bikes” repairman will be at the auction to do minor repairs on the spot.
