Northwestern shut down its Chicago Campus this morning in the aftermath of terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
Tuesday classes at NU’s Medical School, Law School and School of Continuing Studies were canceled and students and faculty were allowed to go home. The Evanston campus remained open.
NU officials will decide Wednesday morning when classes will resume, said NU spokesman Charles Loebbaka.
Loebbaka said administrators have not taken precautions against problems students might have traveling to Evanston. New Student Week begins Friday.
Big Ten officials have not decided whether to postpone Saturday’s home football game against Navy. Commissioner Jim Delaney will hold a conference call tomorrow morning with conference athletic directors to discuss whether to postpone games in all sports, said Assoc. Commissioner Sue Lister.
NU sports’ Web site confirmed that several other NU sporting events have already been canceled: a Tuesday night volleyball game at Loyola University, a Wednesday men’s soccer match at Valparaiso University and a field hockey tournament at Storrs, Conn.
Both O’Hare International Airport and Midway Airport are closed. The Chicago Transit Authority has expanded its service, maintaining a rush-hour schedule throughout the day, said CTA spokeswoman Maria Toscano. Metra trains have also increased service.
Campus clergy members will be present to speak with students and community members Tuesday evening. The Alice Millar Chapel will remain open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. for prayer and meditation.
Services scheduled for 7 p.m. at churches around Evanston include:
an interfaith community service at First Presbyterian Church, 1427 Chicago Ave.
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 1509 Ridge Ave.
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 939 Hinman Ave.
St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 2120 Lincoln St.
