Interfraternity Council executives are searching for a new provost and treasurer for Fall Quarter following the resignations of Brian Traeger and Mark Diehl, issued four days after University Police found both men in a Delta Tau Delta room with marijuana.
UP Lt. Glenn Turner said Diehl was referred to Northwestern officials after being found in possession of marijuana, and Traeger, whose name was misspelled in the police report, was in a room with him at 1:30 a.m. April 30 in Delt.
The IFC received Diehl’s and Traeger’s resignations May 3, said IFC President Phil Ordway. Both will serve through the end of the quarter, he said.
Ordway said the two resigned because of personal reasons.
“The IFC didn’t ask for their resignation or demand it from either of them,” Ordway said. “They did a great job. They chose to resign for personal reasons at the end of the quarter.”
Diehl declined to comment on his resignation.
Traeger wrote in an e-mail statement: “I have resigned from my position of provost on the Interfraternity Council executive board effective at the end of this quarter due to personal reasons. I enjoyed working with the current members of the council and will do my best to transition the newly elected provost for the next semester.”
Isaac Baker, Delt president and Daily deputy campus editor, declined to comment on the incident.
Turner said that on April 30, police arrived at Delt after receiving a noise complaint.
UP discovered a small amount of marijuana in the room, which Diehl said was his, Turner said.
Turner said there were five or six people in the room and all cooperated with the police.
No criminal charges will be filed against Diehl or Traeger, Turner said. NU will discipline the students, he said.
Director of Residential Life Gregg Kindle, whose office handles drug and alcohol violations in NU housing, declined to comment on the case.
“We really deal with disciplining every case on a case-by-case basis,” Kindle said.
Ordway said elections for the positions will be held Thursday at the President’s Forum, a biweekly gathering of all fraternity presidents.
The IFC treasurer is responsible for handling the organization’s fiscal matters. The provost updates the IFC constitution once a year and coordinates judicial review, Ordway said.
At the forum, candidates will deliver a speech and answer questions. Ordway said the presidents will then elect the new officers.
He said many people have already expressed interest in the positions.
James Foster, IFC vice president for public relations, said the elections are open to all members of the Greek community.
“We’re looking for guys that will do as well as Mark (Diehl) and Brian (Traeger) did,” Foster said.
