Medill sophomore Matt Donnelly has been named editor in chief of The Summer Northwestern.
Donnelly said he hopes to expand the depth and breadth of the paper’s Evanston coverage during the summer.
“We’ll be able to do broader stories on what goes on during the week in Evanston,” he said. “Our readership tends to be Evanston residents, because students leave for the summer, so city issues are more important to people.”
Daily Editor in Chief Casey Newton said The Summer Northwestern would be in good hands with Donnelly.
“Matt has long been one of our most dedicated and hard-working staff members, both as a reporter and as a news editor, and I am confident that he will do an excellent job with the summer paper,” said Newton, a Medill junior.
Billy Liu, a member of the Students Publishing Co. Board that selected Donnelly, praised the incoming editor’s creativity.
“He seemed very energetic, and he had some very good ideas,” said Liu, a Medill senior. “We just thought Matt was perhaps the best candidate for the job.”
Donnelly said he will be recruiting writers, designers and photographers to write for the summer paper by posting flyers in Medill mailboxes in Fisk Hall, the Multicultural Center, Norris University Center and the University Library.
“I just want to let the kids know what opportunity there is with The Summer Northwestern,” he said.
Donnelly was selected for the position over Ellie Phillips, a Medill senior and The Daily’s campus editor.
Kristin Turney, The Daily’s design editor, said she is considering staying in Evanston to work for the summer paper because of her respect for Donnelly.
“I’ve worked with Matt for two years and we have a really good working relationship,” said Turney, a Medill sophomore. “He has a lot of knowledge and a good leadership style.”
