A female student studying in University Library on Wednesday afternoon was unknowingly filmed by an unknown man, police said.
The man, hidden by bookcases, was kneeling on the floor of the third level of the East Tower and pointing a video camera at the student, who told police she did not know she was being filmed, said Lt. Shaun Johnson of University Police.
Another female student, who had noticed the man hanging around in the area for two to three hours before the incident, called UP, Johnson said.
But students studying in the library’s towers Thursday night said the incident won’t deter them from studying in the library’s towers.
Weinberg sophomore Michelle Rabkin, one of three female students in the East Tower 10 p.m. Thursday, said she’s never felt threatened while studying there.
“I guess because everyone I’ve seen here looks like a student and is studying, I’ve never questioned it,” she said. “But maybe if I saw someone who was older and didn’t have books for some reason, then I’d notice how isolated we are.”
Weinberg freshman Paul Kofoed, who was holed up in the nearby North Tower’s third level, said he studies in the towers almost every day that safety has never crossed his mind.
“I guess I’d always thought that coming up to the third floor and going to an isolated area would be too much effort for anyone in that market,” he said about the incident. “People are more worried about walking back from the library at night than what will happen in the library.”
Police searched the library after the incident and found neither the suspect nor any evidence, Johnson said, adding that library staff and security have been notified of the incident.
The man was described as a white male, 35 to 40 years old, with dark brown hair, glasses and a bump on the bridge of his nose, Johnson said.
