The Associated Student Government took the next step toward returning alcohol to football tailgates by presenting its proposal on Monday to Board of Trustees members.
ASG President Adam Humann, who outlined the plan to the Student Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees, said the board members were receptive to the idea.
“In general they seemed to like the proposal,” said Humann, a Weinberg junior.
In their first of four annual meetings with the Board of Trustees, Humann, Academic Vice President Sameer Gafoor, Student Services Vice President Laura Ellis, Executive Vice President Jordan Heinz and Speaker of the Senate Richard Caldarone presented proposals to address recent student concerns.
The tailgate proposal would divide the east parking lot of Ryan Field into two sections: a tented area in which alcohol would be served for free to students older than 21 years old and an open area where fraternities could grill and serve non-alcoholic beverages.
University Police would check ID cards against university birthday lists at the only entrance to the tent, and students would not be allowed to bring alcohol out of the tent’s only exit, according to the proposal. Also, instead of fraternities supplying the alcohol, private companies would provide it.
Humann said he hopes to implement a trial tailgate before the Michigan game on Nov. 4 or the Illinois game on Nov. 18, NU’s last regular-season game.
Board members liked the idea of staging a trial tailgate before making a final decision, Humann said.
The authors of the proposal Humann, Interfraternity Council President Dustin Cook, IFC Provost Marty Christensen and Panhellenic Association President Sarah Personette will meet with Student Affairs officials Wednesday to discuss the possibility of the proposal, Humann said.
Heinz also presented two other proposals to board members.
To reduce costs for student groups bringing high-profile events to campus, Heinz proposed that groups be allowed to rent Patten Gym for minimal costs and pay at-cost prices for Cahn Auditorium and Pick-Staiger Concert Hall.
Heinz also proposed that student groups be allowed to bring into Norris University Center food from certain local stores and restaurants instead of having Sodexho-Marriott cater their events.
Also at the meeting:
Ellis proposed eliminating the 5-cent-per-page fee to print at campus computer labs, suggesting that students be allotted a certain number of pages per quarter and then be charged if they exceed that number.
Gafoor suggested that pre-professional advising, Undergraduate Career Services and the Academic Advising Center be under one roof. He also said implementing a degree audit function on CAESAR should be a priority.
