Hoping to become the 12th sorority on campus, Alpha Delta Pi will begin recruiting Northwestern women in two weeks.
ADPi will start rushing sophomore, junior and senior women Oct. 1 to prepare for Winter Rush, held at the beginning of Winter Quarter. Although the sorority will not have a house this year, they plan to move into 1856 Orrington Ave. next fall.
Alpha Omicron Pi tried to become the 12th last Fall Quarter, but when only 17 women officially signed up for the sorority short of its 30-member goal the sorority’s national organization surprised NU’s Panhellenic Association and backed out of the arrangement.
ADPi organizers, however, said they’re in for the long haul, and Panhel members aren’t worried, saying the interest in a new sorority last year was high enough. The ADPi colony consultant at NU, Amanda Sloan, said the sorority isn’t looking for a specific number of applicants, just women who have characteristics such as scholarship, leadership, sisterhood and involvement in community service.
“We’re looking for a core (group) of girls who are enthusiastic about starting something exciting,” Sloan said.
ADPi had a chapter at NU from 1945 until 1971 but shut it down because of low enrollment.
Now she hopes the prodigal sisters return.
“We thought the time was right for Alpha Delta Pi to return to this great academic institution,” Sloan said.
And Panhel President Sarah Personette said NU is ready for ADPi.
“If you look at Northwestern’s Greek community and more specifically at the sorority system, there’s a huge onslaught of women wanting to be involved in it,” said Personette, a Weinberg senior. “And as a result, our numbers are growing and growing. The best way to deal with it is to look toward expansion.”
