Greek students to have new housing option on North Row

Greek students who want to live up north with friends from other fraternities and sororities next year can move to the house at 562 Lincoln St., now occupied by Delta Chi.

The coed house can accommodate 24 students and also will provide a venue for Greek events.

“Individually, there are a lot of people who have good friends in other houses, so it’s a good way to live in the Greek environment but not just in your house,” said Interfraternity Council President Dustin Cook. “For IFC, Panhel and NPHC, it’s a central location as opposed to going to Tech or other buildings (for meetings).”

Although individual members of National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations can move to the new house, it is not meant exclusively for NPHC.

“Our NPHC students aren’t all interested in living in one house any more than four or five fraternities would want to be in the same house,” said Steve Dealph, associate director for Greek affairs.

Delta Chi members will move out of 562 Lincoln St. and into Chi Psi’s former house at 619 Colfax St. by September 2000, leaving Delta Chi’s house open for new Greek residents.

This house will host upperclassmen from many Greek organizations rather than a single chapter because fraternities might leave their aging houses in the next decade, said Panhellenic Association President Sarah Personette.

“We didn’t want, as a Greek community, to put another fraternity in there if they’d be ineligible to live there in five to 10 years,” said Personette, a Weinberg junior.

Although the university would like to re-build facilities on the North Row, construction plans will not be made until new housing is found for the groups that live there now, said Gregg Kindle, director of residential life.

For now, administrators can renew the all-Greek house option each year, Kindle said.

Greek leaders said the house’s location might attract sorority members who take classes on North Campus.

“Any women who can’t live down south in the sorority quads because of classes can still have the Greek experience,” Personette said.

Although Personette and Cook said they don’t know yet of any students who plan to move to the new house, Sharon Keith, area coordinator of Greek Life, said she was pleased with students’ responses. Keith declined to release the number of interested students.

Students who want to live in the new Greek house next year and haven’t already agreed to live in their chapter house can write “562 Lincoln” on their housing lottery tickets and fill out an application provided by chapter presidents.

Delta Chi’s current chapter room will be able to accommodate Greek events and give chapters without houses a place to meet. NPHC, IFC and Panhel currently reserve rooms in university buildings or rent Scott Hall’s Guild Lounge.

The house should not need major renovations because Delta Chi renovated the house in 1997 before moving in, said Cook, a McCormick junior.
