Candidate urges ambitious services program

SBX workers kicked Weinberg sophomore Laura Ellis out of their store when she tried to copy book titles in order to later buy them online.

So as the Associated Student Government’s student services vice president, Ellis would create a central Web site where students could find required books for their courses.

Running unopposed for the office, Ellis said Tuesday she hopes to expand students’ choices and lives.

“I want to make lives for Northwestern students better, more enriched and more enjoyable,” Ellis told an audience of seven campaign managers and ASG leaders.

The book list Web site would make life easier for students because they would be able to access it two weeks before class begins, she said. Some history professors also have told her they would contribute to such a list, which could eliminate some red tape.

Giving students less time-consuming community service options is another of Ellis’ priorities. She supports at least one such activity, called Evanston and Northwestern Community Building Day, to enhance town-gown relations. Students would work in Evanston, removing graffiti and rebuilding parks.

Another proposal would establish “NU Promotional Days” at lesser-known Chicago museums.

“Chicago offers an extensive array of cross-cultural and unique museums that are not often taken advantage of by Northwestern students,” Ellis said in her platform.

In addition, students could check out memberships at popular museums from NU’s library and be able to visit the cultural centers for free.

Ellis said she would continue working on current initiatives, such as Midnight Madness and a video rental service on campus.

Other ideas in Ellis’ platform include:

pi encouraging minority recruitment efforts by introducing interested students, both minority and non-minority, to a nationwide effort;

pi giving students easier access to Facilities Management in order to inform them about poorly lit areas on campus;

pi publicizing the range of uses for the 24-hour Searle hotline;

pi setting up a student flea market in the spring for students to sell furniture and books;

pi increasing the attention to relationship violence during New Student Week responsibilities sessions;

pi and opening a forum for students to address concerns and ideas to the student services vice president and the vice president of student affairs directly.

With an ambitious platform, Ellis said she is dedicated to accomplishing all her goals.

“All it does is take effort and I’m willing to put that effort in,” Ellis said. “Everything in my platform is researched to the point that I know it is feasible.”
