Gearhead Outfitters closed in June after over 20 years in Evanston.

The retail space, located at 1600 Sherman Ave., mainly sold athletic wear for outdoor spaces such as The North Face, Patagonia and Astral. The location was originally named Uncle Dan’s until the Gearhead Outfitters acquired the place in 2019. Gearhead Outfitters is a national chain with locations across several states.

The store faced economic losses for years and decided it was best to close, according to the Evanston Round Table.

The store had been around Evanston since the 2000s and had built a community with shoppers, a sentiment that is exemplified in its Yelp reviews. Many comment on the good brand selections and the wonderful customer service.

Gearhead Outfitters has Chicago locations in areas such as Lincoln Square and Highland Park.
