When I first learned that a Detroit-style pizza restaurant won this category, I wasn’t sure what to think. Chicago has produced some incredible originals — the Ferris wheel, the skyscraper, the zipper — but its ways of making pizza just might be the most significant. Both deep dish and tavern-style can be found in abundance in Evanston, so it was surprising to find that another city’s method reigned supreme in the vote this year.
But after I went to Union Squared and tried their pepperoni pizza, it became clear that their number one spot was well-earned.

The ingredients are perfectly balanced, with a respectable cheese-to-crust ratio and an optimal amount of pepperoni. Even as someone who rarely orders pepperoni, I found it complemented the rest of the pizza wonderfully. The airy, crispy crust was one of the best pizza crusts I’ve ever had.
Union Squared introduced me to a new style of pizza and is the newest restaurant on my list of favorites. I’m glad I haven’t allowed my Illinoisian biases to prevent me from enjoying one of Evanston’s best.
If you’re like me and want to try some eye-opening pizza, I highly recommend making your way to 1307 Chicago Ave. to try a slice (or more).
After all, Chicagoans and Detroiters can agree on at least one thing: It’s better than New York-style.
