Redshirt junior guard Anthony Gaines entered the transfer portal Monday.

A two-time captain, Gaines played in 97 games with Northwestern and averaged 5.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.

The New York native started just 35 contests, including 15 in his career-best sophomore season. During the 2018-19 campaign, Gaines achieved career-highs in points (6.9) per game, rebounds per game (4.7) and assists per game (2.2) —during which he also blocked 19 shots and notched 27 steals.

After playing just 10 games in his third season due to injury, Gaines achieved a career-high 42.5 field goal percentage from the field, as well as a career-best 34.6 3-point percentage during the 2020-21 campaign. However, he scored in double digits just once and averaged only 3.9 points.

But Gaines played well on the glass. Averaging 4.4 rebounds on the season, he grabbed a career-high 12 in a win over Chicago State.

Gaines is the second Wildcats player to enter the portal after junior forward Miller Kopp in March. With two of the Cats’ veterans likely departing, coach Chris Collins may rely on players such as guard Chase Audige and forward Pete Nance to lead NU next season.
