Norris University Center was evacuated Friday evening after a small fire was started during the food preparations for the annual MegaShabbat event, Norris executive director Jeremy Schenk told The Daily.

The fire was caused when a piece of aluminum foil being used to prepare the kosher meal caught in the flame, Schenk said. The fire was quickly put out with kosher water, he added, and there was no damage to the building — nor the food.

However, the building was still evacuated because there was smoke that had spread to the second floor, Schenk said. The fire department then arrived to reset the alarm.

MegaShabbat — a Shabbat dinner open to students of all backgrounds and held on the ground floor of Norris — was able to continue after the building was reopened, Schenk said.
