An Evanston man was arrested Wednesday night in connection with a handgun recovery during a traffic stop in south Evanston.

Officers pulled over a 32-year-old Niles resident in the 400 block of Asbury Avenue because he was speeding, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said in a news release. When officers approached the vehicle, they smelled burnt marijuana coming from inside, Dugan said.

The rear seat passenger, 18, was asked to exit the vehicle and a loaded revolver was recovered from his waistband, Dugan said. A small amount of marijuana and an unloaded handgun were also recovered from the rear trunk area, he said.

The 18-year-old Evanston resident, the 32-year-old driver and a juvenile passenger were taken into custody, Dugan said. The driver was given traffic citations and released while the 18-year-old was charged with one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon — a felony — and two counts of possession of a firearm and ammunition without valid identification, both misdemeanors. The juvenile was released without any charges.
