A Chicago man was arrested Friday in connection with a handgun recovery in south Evanston.

Detectives observed two men walking in the area of Jonquil Terrace and Ashland Avenue in Chicago on Thursday when they recognized one of them as being an active gang member, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said in a news release. They also noticed a distinctive object in his sweatshirt.

When the detectives exited their vehicle, the man fled on foot, Dugan said. His companion fled as well, discarding a loaded handgun as he ran away. The detectives could not locate the companion, but Dugan said they were able to recover both the gun and the alleged gang member’s sweatshirt, which had another gun in it.

Dugan said the alleged gang member was taken into custody after midnight Friday and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon on parole — a felony.
