Blotter: Des Plaines 16-year-old arrested in connection with handgun recovery
September 12, 2017
A Des Plaines juvenile was arrested Monday in connection with two felonies and a misdemeanor in central Evanston, according to a news release.
The vehicle the juvenile was in was stopped in the 1300 block of Emerson Street because it was traveling in the wrong lane of traffic, the release said. The detectives who stopped the vehicle smelled marijuana in the vehicle.
When asked about the smell, the front seat passenger — the 16-year-old Des Plaines resident — handed the officer a plastic bag of cannabis, according to the release. After he exited the vehicle, officers found a loaded handgun with the serial number partially destroyed in his pant leg. Upon further search of the vehicle, officers also found another plastic bag with 27 grams of marijuana in it, the release said.
The 16-year-old was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and defacing the serial number of a firearm — both felonies. He was also charged with possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor, according to the release.
