A man was arrested Tuesday afternoon in connection with multiple alcohol-related traffic offenses in downtown Evanston.

An officer stopped the man when he made a turn from Davis Street to Ridge Avenue and drove across the sidewalk, Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said. The man stopped at the red light at Church Street, but did not move when the light turned green.

The officer observed the man sleeping behind the wheel, Dugan said, and when he awoke the officer had him pull over. The driver had bloodshot, glass eyes and slurred speech, in addition to there being a can of beer in the center console.

After a sobriety test, the man was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol, in addition to driving with open alcohol.

Evanston man arrested in connection with domestic battery

A man was arrested Wednesday morning in connection with domestic battery in downtown Evanston.

Officers were called to a home on the 900 block of Davis Street for a domestic dispute, Dugan said. The man’s girlfriend had locked herself in her bedroom because the man was attempting to physically harm her following a verbal dispute.

The woman had a contusion on her forehead and an abrasion on her lip, which she said occurred when the boyfriend punched her several times, Dugan said. The man had a small scratch on his face from when she scratched him in self-defense to prevent him from harming her.

The man was charged with domestic battery, a misdemeanor.
