US. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) underwent an outpatient heart procedure Tuesday morning at Northwestern Memorial Hospital after an annual physical found a common abnormal heart rhythm, according to a news release.

The procedure, which was described as low-risk, aimed to treat Durbin’s “atrial flutter” and get rid of abnormal heart tissue and correct the irregular heart beat. According to the news release, Durbin had no symptoms before or after discovering the condition and “maintained his regular schedule.”

Durbin, 72, said in the release the surgery will give his “classic roadster many more miles of reliable service,” and warned Congress against cutting health care funding.

“My Congressional colleagues who want to cut funding for medical research and take away health insurance for millions of Americans should remember that all of us are only one diagnosis away from needing the best care for ourselves and the people we love,” he said in the release.

Durbin will stay in Illinois for the remainder of the week, according to the release.
