A man was struck and killed by a CTA “L” train at the Foster Street stop Friday afternoon, police said.

The 29-year-old man’s death was ruled a suicide on Saturday by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, Evanston police confirmed. A witness told police the man had jumped from the platform in front of the train, police said in a news release.

Evanston Fire Department crews responded at about 4 p.m. to a report of a person pinned underneath the fourth car of the train. After finding the man deceased, police and fire department officials waited at the scene for equipment to remove the man from beneath the train.

Service on the Purple Line was temporarily suspended after the incident, and Foster Street was temporarily closed between Maple and Sherman avenues, police said.

This story was updated on Saturday to include information from the medical examiner’s report.
