U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky endorses Mark Tendam in mayoral race
November 22, 2016
Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) endorsed Ald. Mark Tendam (6th) in the upcoming race for mayor of Evanston, Schakowsky said in a statement Monday.
Schakowsky’s endorsement focused on Tendam’s place in and advocacy for various marginalized groups within Evanston, including the LGBTQ and Jewish communities. Schakowsky said Tendam will fight for every Evanston resident regardless of their race, ethnicity and sexual orientation.
“One of Evanston’s greatest strengths is our diversity,” the statement said. “As our mayor, Mark Tendam will maintain a resolute commitment to equality and inclusivity for all Evanstonians. He will ensure that Evanston remains a sanctuary city, providing a safe haven for families in jeopardy of deportation during this uncertain time.”
The alderman joined the race in early October, and is currently running alongside three other candidates: former Evanston Township High School supervisor Gary Gaspard, Ald. Brian Miller (9th) and businessman Steve Hagerty. His mayoral platform tackles issues such as affordable housing, reducing violence and increasing local employment opportunities.
Tendam has served the Sixth Ward for nearly eight years. During his tenure, he worked on changing the organization that runs the Evanston Animal Shelter, as well as on amendments focusing on affordable housing ordinances.
The new mayor will be elected in the spring.
