Women’s Basketball: Northwestern selected to play in WNIT
March 14, 2016
Northwestern was selected to participate in the Women’s NIT, tournament organizers announced Monday.
The Wildcats will host the University of San Diego (23-7, 13-5 West Coast) on Thursday at Welsh-Ryan Arena in their opening WNIT game. The time of the game will be announced on Tuesday, according to the program.
This will be NU’s fourth appearance in the WNIT since 2010. The Cats, who last competed in the event two years ago, have a 5-3 record in the tournament under coach Joe McKeown.
After reaching the NCAA Tournament last season, NU (18-16, 4-14) began the season 10-0 and reached No. 12 in the AP poll, but struggled mightily in Big Ten play and finished 12th in the conference. Three wins in the Big Ten Tournament, however, including upsets of Minnesota and Indiana, guaranteed the Cats a winning record.
