Best Latin Food: Tomate Fresh Kitchen

Khadrice Rollins, Managing Editor

Thanks in part to a menu featuring dishes ranging from al pastor burritos to duck tacos, Tomate Fresh Kitchen was voted Best Latin Food in Evanston.

Located at 914 Noyes St., the Latin restaurant has become a popular choice for many in the area. Despite closing at 6 p.m. on most days, Tomate has been able to build a loyal clientele with its flavorful food and large menu. Whether it’s burritos, empanadas, gorditas, tacos, tamales or various salsas, Tomate offers many of the staple foods commonly associated with Mexican, Guatemalan, Peruvian and Argentinian cuisine, and all for a low price.

In addition to quality food, the small eatery also provides a nice environment for patrons. Although there is no dining area in the restaurant, the camaraderie created by waiting in line in such tight-knit quarters coupled with the friendly service provides more than enough atmosphere. And while people wait on their orders and chat with those around them, they have the ability to watch their food being prepared as it goes from the grill to its packaging.

The good food coupled with quality customer service and an easily accessible location have all helped make Tomate a popular choice for Northwestern students particularly. Tomate recently received a $10,000 loan from the NU student organization Lending for Evanston and Northwestern Development. The loan was the second-biggest in LEND’s history and allowed Tomate to purchase new refrigerators and expand its work space in order to help better serve the community.
