A Northwestern trustee was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Obama announced his intent to appoint W. James McNerney Jr. to the Washington, D.C.-based arts center last week.

“These fine public servants bring a depth of experience and tremendous dedication to their important roles,” Obama said in a news release. “I look forward to working with them.”

McNerney is the CEO of The Boeing Company and previously worked at the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, General Electric, Procter & Gamble and McKinsey & Company, Inc.

McNerney has been chairman of the President’s Export Council since 2010. He is also a member of the board at Northwestern Memorial Healthcare and The Field Museum in Chicago.

He received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his M.B.A. from Harvard University.
