Gameday

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Senior quarterback Trevor Siemian left Saturday’s game against Purdue with an apparent leg injury and did not return to the game.

Siemian attempted a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-1 early in the second quarter and was stuffed short of the first-down marker. He stayed down for a moment and was helped off the field.

Junior Zack Oliver replaced Siemian on Northwestern’s next drive and played most of the rest of the game, with redshirt freshman Matt Alviti spelling him in rushing situations.

Oliver completed five of  his 11 passes for 85 yards, with 23 yards rushing, and Alviti completed his only attempt, for 3 yards, and carried four times for 5 yards on the ground.

Afterwards, Oliver said he was happy with how he played, especially after halftime, when he was 4-7.

“It took me a couple plays to get my self-confidence back,” he said. “Then we came out in the second half, had great protection all day, the receivers were running great routes, and we did pretty well.”

Coach Pat Fitzgerald said he did not know what Siemian’s status for next week’s game against Illinois will be but called the injury “pretty serious.”
