Residential building on Sheridan struck by lightning
June 18, 2014
A three-story brick residential building on Sheridan Road was struck by lightning Wednesday morning, knocking out the building’s electrical power feed and a part of the chimney, authorities said.
The Evanston fire department was dispatched shortly after 11:30 a.m. to 621 Sheridan Road to look into reports of an explosion in the building’s courtyard, according to the department. After arriving, responders found part of the chimney had fallen on two of the building’s porches.
City officials will investigate the building’s electrical system and structural integrity during which residents will be displaced, authorities said. The Red Cross is helping with the displaced families.
The lightning strike did not cause a fire, authorities said. No injuries have been reported as a result of the incident.
