A 23-year-old man remained in critical but stable condition Monday evening after a shooting the previous day at a park in south Evanston, according to police.

Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said the shooting happened at about 8:50 p.m. Sunday at Elks Park in the 600 block of Mulford Street. The shooter approached the man on foot and opened fire, hitting the man several times in his back, buttocks and leg, Parrott said.

The man, who is from Evanston, was taken to St. Francis Hospital, Parrott said. The man’s condition was not known immediately after the shooting, though he was reported to be in critical but stable condition as of 6 p.m. Monday, Parrott added.

At the time of the shooting, there were other people in or near the park, Parrott said. Detectives are investigating the shooting, and no one is in custody.
