Ellen King decided to start Hewn Bakery with her friend Julie Matthei to turn her home baking style — known for its careful attention to shaping dough — into a business.
The artisan bread shop, which opened last week at 810 Dempster St., lives up to its rustic name with corrugate metal panels and Few Spirits barrels used to mix dough. The menu includes baguettes, pastries and salads.
Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and several aldermen attended the bakery’s ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday.
