Northwestern’s School of Communication announced today a Spring Break trip to the University’s campus in Doha, Qatar.

Communication Dean Sally Ewing sent an email announcing the trip to students in the school. According to the email, the five-night trip starting March 23 will give those who attend the opportunity to interact with students from NU-Q as well as to tour the Museum of Islamic Art and Al Jazeera television.

The trip is open to students through application only. Priority will be given to those majoring in radio/TV/film and communication studies, as these are programs currently offered in Qatar. According to Ewing’s email, students in other majors will be considered if they show an interest in Middle East studies.

The trip will be led by communication studies lecturer Catherine Carrigan and radio/TV/film lecturer John Haas. A staff member from the Qatar Support Office will also be on hand to guide the trip.

The University will cover the cost of the round trip, hotel and food consumed in Doha. Students are responsible only for the costs of souvenirs and participation in activities not organized through the program, the email said.

Communication junior Ellen Barry, a radio/TV/film major, said she is considering applying for the trip.

“I think it’s a wonderful opportunity to see more of the world,” she said. “Especially as film majors, we should learn more about the things we want to make films about.”

Both the School of Communication and Medill have sent students to Qatar in previous years.
