A 20-year-old Evanston resident was wounded early this morning in an apparent gang shooting that police say is connected to a recent teen slaying.

Evanston Police responded to the 1900 block of Howard Street and found the wounded man, a known gang member, shortly before 2 a.m. today. Police say he was specifically targeted by two attackers as he was getting out of a car and that he was shot multiple times. The man is currently in critical condition at St. Francis Hospital, according to a news release.

EPD Cmdr. Jay Parrott told The Daily there are preliminary indicators that the shooting was in retaliation for the murder of 19-year-old Justin Murray, who was gunned down Nov. 29 in Evanston’s west end. Murray’s wake and funeral were held this morning at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ.

Today’s shooting is related to an “ongoing violent feud between two extended families that have ties to gang-related activity,” Parrott said in an email.
