Don’t be alarmed if you hear booms and loud music coming from McCormick Auditorium this weekend. Boomshaka, Northwestern’s percussion and dance group, will be performing its annual spring show. The Current got to sit down with Weinberg freshman and Boomshaka rookie Zach Hyman to talk about catchy pop songs and his thoughts about the upcoming performance. The Current: What are you most excited about in this show? Zach Hyman: Really just performing in front of hundreds of people and showing to the world what we’ve been working on for the past few months. I’m most excited about that. It’s going to be a really awesome, really high-energy show, and it’s going to be just amazing showing it off to all of those people. The Current: What is your favorite song to dance to? ZH: “Call Me Maybe.” I think that’s everybody’s favorite song to dance to. It’s way too catchy for its own good. It’s really fun in a really silly way. The Current: Who at Northwestern would you most like to see bust a move? ZH: I’d say Morty. I’d like to see him shake it down. He’s the type of guy who would do that sort of thing, I would guess. The Current: Is there a dancer you really admire? ZH: Probably all of the kids in Fusion. Their show last weekend was really great, and they’re all amazing dancers. The Current: What is the best Boomshaka sound? ZH: I’m a big fan of the biggies. I don’t get to play it that much, but I like playing it when I do, and I like the sound. Biggies are the big trash cans as opposed to the smaller buckets. The Current: What is the best dance movie? ZH: I would say Step Up. That was such a long time ago, but I remember being impressed when I was a junior high kid. The Current: What can the audience look forward to this weekend? ZH: My favorite moment in the whole show is the very beginning bit of opener. It’s this really atmospheric music, and we’re doing this very simple sway. I feel awesome when I’m doing it, and I know if I was an audience member, I’d be like “Oh my God, this is going to be nuts!” So I really can’t wait for that moment, Thursday night at eight when we’re just swaying up there. -Simone Alicea
