Bienen senior Nicole Negrete wants to bring a little movie magic to Northwestern. As the outreach chair for the Bienen Student Advisory Board, Negrete has had a major hand in planning its Movie Music Concert, showing Thursday. The Current asked Negrete about her own favorite movie jams. The Current: What’s your favorite film score? Nicole Negrete: One of my favorite childhood movies is Hook, and the film score from that is one of my all-time favorites. It’s by John Williams, and we’ll be playing that at the concert on Thursday. The Current: If you could have any composer write the score for your life, who would it be? NN: Who was the guy who wrote the music for Inception? Inception was one of his more recent ones, and he did some of the Batman movies in the past. I think I would choose him. He’s been doing it for awhile, but he’s really keeping it up and I like what he’s doing. The Current: If you could write a score for another person’s life, who would it be? NN: Amelia Earhart. I was obsessed with her when I was a child and the story of her and how she disappeared. There have been movies about her, but they just haven’t done it justice. If I were any sort of filmographer or had any sort of say in movies being made, I would make a much better movie about her, and I would love to compose that music because I find her very fascinating. The Current: What are you most looking forward to about the concert? NN: We’re doing a Lion King suite. It’s like orchestral music from the film score but also a little bit of “Circle of Life” at the end. It’s not a typical one that gets played a lot, but it’s a really great arrangement. The Current: Any surprises? NN: We’re featuring a youth orchestra. They’re elementary and middle school students from the YOURS Project in Chicago. They’re guest artists, and they’re going to be playing a little bit of Star Wars, and one of the boys will be conducting it. He’s going to be wearing a Darth Vader costume and conducting with a lightsaber baton. I hope that’s still going on. Last I heard it was. The Current: Who would play you in a movie of your life? NN: I don’t want to pick someone who’s way out of my league. If I’m thinking ideal world, I’m a big fan of Natalie Portman. I don’t know, she’s got brown hair, she’s short, and I like how she acts. The Current: Is there a movie that you want your life to be like? NN: I can think of lots of TV shows. It’s harder with movies. When I’m older, like a real grown-up, like “Friends” or “How I Met Your Mother”. I want to live that kind of lifestyle, just always hanging out with my friends at the bar or cafe that I live above. –Simone Alicea
