For the first time since 1999, Northwestern has an Associated Press men’s basketball All-American.
John Shurna was named an honorable mention on the 2011-12 AP All-America team Monday, becoming the ninth Wildcats player to earn All-American honors. He is the first to receive the award since center Evan Eschmeyer was named a second-team All-American in 1999.
The senior forward was a first-team All-Big Ten player after leading the conference in scoring with 20 points per game in Big Ten play. He set records for most points in a career and a season during the 2011-12 campaign.
Shurna also averaged 20 points per game over the course of all 33 games this season, which ranked him 15th in the country. He finished ninth in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 44 percent from behind the arc. His nearly three 3-pointers per game also put him in the top 20 in the nation.
He was one of seven Big Ten players named to the All-American teams, five of whom were named honorable mentions.
