A contractor broke into a gas line Saturday morning in downtown Evanston, prompting temporary evacuations of local businesses, including the Rotary International headquarters, 1560 Sherman Ave.
Utility workers were trying to lay a fiber optics line just after 11 a.m. when they struck a gas main, said Tom Janetske, the city’s fire and life safety service deputy chief.
Following the rupture, emergency personnel and other utility crews responded to the scene near the intersection of Grove Street and Sherman Avenue, according to the city’s website. The crews measured air quality levels and sealed the leak.
For a short period, the stretch of Grove Street between Chicago Avenue and the nearby Purple Line tracks was closed.
No injuries were reported.
