After placing second in the Big Ten Championships, No. 57 Northwestern will appear as the No. 10 seed in the NCAA South Regional, the team’s 26th appearance in postseason play.
Led by All-Big Ten first team senior David Lipsky, NU will hope to crack the top five of the 13-team tournament in order to advance to the NCAA National Championships, a feat the program last pulled off in 2009.
The Wildcats can be encouraged by their performances down the stretch in their most recent two tournaments. In the Illini Spring Classic, the Cats took third in a tournament featuring 14 teams, including 10 from the Big Ten. . Junior Eric Chun led the Cats with an even-par 144 and took second place in the tournament. In their next outing, all five Cats shot even- or below-par in the final round of the Big Ten Championships, including a 5-under 67 from Lipsky, allowing the team to vault from fifth place after the first round to second at the tournament’s finish. Lipsky finished in third after winning the tournament the year before.
The three-round tournament will be held May 19 to 21 at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo.
