A Wednesday night promotional event for Waa-Mu, a long-running Northwestern student production, will feature a live performance by Communication sophomore Chet Hanks, who performs as Chet Haze.
The event will take place in Cahn Auditorium at 7 p.m. Communication junior Allie Brodsky, the co-outreach chair for Waa-Mu, said although his set is not yet confirmed, Haze will most likely perform two or three songs, including “White and Purple (Northwestern Remix).”
The event is primarily a fashion show featuring NU sorority women as models and will showcase the designs of Weinberg freshman Zoe Damacela.
“Waa-Mu is one of Northwestern’s oldest traditions,” said Jake Perlman, Communication sophomore and the co-outreach chair for Waa-Mu. “It’s original music, original lyrics and it’s all about coming from students’ minds. We were trying to think of a way to reach out to the rest of the Northwestern community and showcase other unique things students do.”
Perlman said there is no financial goal in mind; most funds raised will go toward other promotional events for Waa-Mu, and some will go to the fraternity or sorority with the most representation at the event. Fifteen percent of proceeds will go to that Greek organization’s philanthropy of choice.
Perlman said Damacela was chosen based on local recognition. She has displayed her designs on “The Tyra Banks Show.”
“She’s very, very successful,” Perlman said. “We heard about her and asked if she would be willing to use her clothes. She was very generous and said yes.”
The Waa-Mu committee asked every sorority on campus if it would participate in the event. Each chapter chose a model to represent itself.
“We thought it was an easy logistical way to organize things, so people don’t feel a certain group is left out,” Perlman said. “As a whole, they represent many communities.”
Brodsky said “people can expect a night of fun music and fashion” and an “amazing performance by Chet Haze.”
Weinberg junior Lena Bell said she will be attending the show because her best friend is co-hosting it.
“I’m open to (Haze’s) performance,” she said. “I hope I’m impressed.”
Communication freshman Margaux Pepper said she has some reservations about the show.
“I would be more curious than interested in going to hear the ‘great music,'” she said.
