ORLAND PARK, Ill. – The mother of former Northwestern star quarterback Zak Kustok and Comcast SportsNet reporter Sarah Kustok was shot and killed early Wednesday morning.
Anita Kustok, 58, died of a gunshot wound to the head in what was ruled a homicide, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday that Kustok’s husband, Allan Kustok, was charged with murdering his wife and has a bond hearing Friday.
Kustok was a teacher at Central Elementary School in Riverside, Ill., according to the school’s website.
As NU’s starting quarterback in 2000, Zak Kustok led the team to win a share of the Big Ten title. He is one of the most prolific passers in NU football history.
“We’re deeply saddened to hear about the tragedy in the Kustok family,” athletic department spokesman Michael Wolf said.
“Our prayers are with Zak and the rest of the family at this extremely difficult time.”
