The best column I ever wrote will never print, in The Daily Northwestern or anywhere else. It was about the South Side Irish parade, a proud Chicago tradition that was put to rest because reasonable people can only tolerate so much lawbreaking in a short period of time. The gist of the column was that I was crushed that I never made it down to the parade and two years ago the cooler heads prevailed and the show was put to rest. But that decision came before I had a job with The Daily, and my column’s subject faded into old news.
You’ll find plenty of better writers in this paper, but I couldn’t have asked for a better topic. It was about beer, and Chicago, and the ethnic fabric of a city, and stubborn people that didn’t want to change. I love the personalities of communities, be them in Chicago or North Campus–and that’s what you’ll read about in my column.
