Twenty-five Northwestern administrators were named to the Faculty Honor Roll last week, a list that includes University President Morton O. Schapiro and Dean of Students Burgwell Howard.

Voting for the honor roll was included on the ballot for Associated Student Government’s campus-wide election on April 14. Gabby Daniels, ASG academic vice president, said including faculty honor roll voting alongside ASG candidates was a first.

“We knew that people were going to be voting anyway,” the Weinberg sophomore said. “We figured, ‘What’s the best way to get people to respond to something?'”

Somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 students submitted votes for the honor roll, Daniels said. About 3,500 undergraduates voted in the ASG election.

Daniels said about 500 students nominated faculty and administrators for last year’s honor roll.

“It was very exciting to see so many responses,” she said. “It’s another way to engage the student body.”

Faculty members will likely be announced by the end of the week, Daniels said, as she said she and other members of ASG’s Academic Committee must sort through votes, many of which included misspellings.

The list is based on the student nominations, but Daniels said the size of specific departments is taken into account. For instance, bigger departments like the Department of Economics would likely get more votes, but the list should be more representative of all academic departments at NU, she said.

Daniels said ASG’s Academic Committee has planned changes for next year’s honor roll voting. Rather than this year’s write-in method, she said next year will likely have a drop down menu with individual professors’ names.

Part of the importance of the honor roll, Daniels said, is that it’s one of the criteria for faculty to receive tenure.

“The reason why we all are here is first and foremost academics,” she said. “Showing your appreciation to professors that really impact your life through an honor roll is one of the best ways. Actions speak louder than words.”
