In our latest edition, we’re delving into action on campus you might know very little about, or are trying to make sense of. As for the former, check out Katie Glueck’s cover story on green initiatives and history at Northwestern. Sure, environmental matters are constantly getting exposure (and rightfully so), but we’re going deeper than recycling the evidence of last night’s beer pong tournament. This feels like the right moment to spotlight the surprising array of eco-minded groups on campus, considering upcoming events. (Check out Katie’s sidebar for details.) Speaking of setting up your weekend schedule, if there’s one event I beseech you to attend, it’s the community forum Thursday (Louis Room, 6 p.m.) in response to the blackface incident on Halloween. At the very least, take a moment to school yourself on a brief history of blackface in America. You’ve hopefully read the editorial on the incident and its ramifications in Forum by the time you’ve reached this page, but we felt compelled to take a hiatus from the Social Diary debauchery to provide an informative backstory. For a breather from serious matters like carbon emissions and racial tensions on campus, turn to the Culture Blotter for musings on whether it’s time for Mariah Carey to pull a Madonna and reinvent herself. Change is – literally – in the air after all.
