Tickets for NU Day at Wrigley Field sold out within two and a half hours of going on sale Monday morning, said Merrie Weintraub, a representative of the Northwestern Class Alliance, the student group that works with the alumni association to organize the ticket sales.
Students lined up around Norris University Center early, some with multiple WildCARDs, to purchase the approximately 1500 tickets that went on sale at 10:00 a.m.
“It’s definitely the fastest I’ve ever seen the tickets go,” said Weintraub, a Communication junior who has served on NCA for three years. “Last year they sold out over the course of an entire day, but not in a matter of hours.”
George Gianakakos, a Communication junior, said he “tag-teamed” waiting in line with his friend over the course of an hour. He said he was five people away from the ticket window when the line was told that tickets had sold out.
“People were upset,” he said. “I saw people with about five WildCARDs waiting in line. There was definitely a great sense of urgency,” he said.
Gianakakos said there was still a line stretching around most of Norris when the tickets sold out.
“When I started in line I was by Norbucks,” he said. “My friend I switched off with had already been waiting in line for half an hour to even get to that point.”
Weintraub said the unprecedented turnout was likely due in part to the “general panic” incited by Ludacris tickets for A&O Ball selling out so quickly last week.
“People are definitely getting the message,” she said. “If you want tickets you have to show up extra early.”
