The Analytics Division of Northwestern’s Institute for Student Business Education did not care about the “who” of last week’s Associated Student Government elections. The student analysts were more concerned with the “why.”
The group released a report Monday analyzing approximately 1,550 student voters’ responses to campus issues addressed during the ASG election campaigns. The report explained the results of three surveys sent to the e-mail lists of 18 residential halls and 15 Greek chapters in the two weeks prior to the election, said Joel Haney, the group’s director.
“The main focus of our report was not to predict a winner,” the Weinberg sophomore said. “It was to see how people approached the issues.”
According to the report, NU students care about ASG support for student groups and campus shuttle services but are indifferent to the addition of a fall A&O Productions event and Evanston-NU relations. The report took into account whether responders lived on North or South Campus and if the results suggested support for a candidate.
The election report was the first public report released by the Analytics Division, which was established in September. The 35 student analysts have worked on projects for student groups, such as A&O, and corporations, such as Universum.
Haney sent ASG President-elect Mike McGee a copy of the results.
“We hope he reads the report and sees the importance level and takes it as campus opinion,” he said.
An additional report analyzing Greek voting patterns and issue importance to students involved in the Greek community will be released April 27.
